Does the present system of education encourage us to admit our lack of knowledge?

lesson 33 8th grade English

Prompt:

If we are afraid to reveal our lack of knowledge we will not be able to learn. In order to make progress we must admit where we are now. Such an admission of ignorance is not easy. As Thoreau says, “How can we remember our ignorance which our growth requires, when we are using our knowledge all the time?”

Topic: Does the present system of education encourage us to admit our lack of knowledge, or is there too much pressure to demonstrate the acquisition of knowledge?

I think that with the present system of education does make some people admit their lack of knowledge. What the quote above means is that you cannot move on without admitting your mistakes and the things that you don’t know.

In order to move forward, you have to admit your mistakes. For example:

You are a student in a classroom. You have trouble with fractions in math. The teacher asks the class: “Does anyone have trouble with fractions in the class?” Now, here’s how the situation would go if you do not admit you are having trouble:

A couple students nod their heads. You are not one of them. A couple days pass and you still don’t get fractions. Therefore, you cannot pass your tests, thus failing and falling behind on your grades. This scene demonstrates how not admitting your mistakes can make everything seem harder.

Now, I will give the scene were you admit to the teacher that you are having trouble:

The teacher asks the class: “Is anyone having problems with fractions?” A couple students raise their hands, including you. The teacher comes over and helps each student, even you. A couple days later, you ace the test, go on to the next grade, and are glad you raised your hand.

The 2 scenes I gave show very different results. As you can see, the student that admitted he didn’t know fractions went very far in life and didnt have problems with fractions. The student who didn’t admit that he didn’t know about fractions didn’t get very far in the grade.

I hope that this essay helped you understand the prompt. It took me a couple trys to get it right, but now I understand very well.
